Neglect of a neighbourhood: oral accounts of life in ‘old Beijing’ since the eve of the People’s Republic. Paper written by Harriet Evans (2014), Urban History, Volume 41, Issue04, November 2014 pp 686-704.
Oral accounts of life over seven decades in Dashalanr, a popular neighbourhood in central Beijing, reveal a social world that despite being shaped by the state’s policies of social and political classification, housing and employment, has been resistant to complete appropriation by them. Based on research in the neighbourhood since 2005, and drawing on Xuanwu District archives, this article examines local residents’ accounts of long decades of hardship and neglect. With an analytical framework that links gender with temporality, place and space, it suggests ways in which their singular experiences can be read as historical narrative.
Fu, Qiang and Lin, Nan (2013) The weaknesses of civic territorial organizations : civic engagement and homeowners associations in urban China. International Journal of Urban and Regional Research. Prepublished September, 3, 2013. DOI: 10.1111/1468-2427.12080
China’s massive transformation in urban governance, which is characterized by breaking the link between workplace and residence and consolidating state territorial agencies at the grassroots level, has profound implications for urban residents. While community building is employed as a deliberate (top-down) approach to restore a governable urban society, the establishment, development and problems of bottom-up civic territorial organizations — homeowners associations — are garnering increased attention from academia. Based on field research conducted in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Meizhou in Guangdong Province from 2009 to 2011, we show that civic engagement, a necessary condition for the development of homeowners associations, is inadequate across urban communities. To understand why, we identified and analyzed three elements — lack of awareness of partitioned property ownership, the hidden costs of civic engagement and deficiency in social capital — as factors that impede civic engagement across urban communities. These elements also provide yardsticks for scholars to evaluate why, whether and how homeowners (dis-)engage from neighborhood affairs.

The transformation and reconstruction of urban old industrial areas is always an urgent and hot topic to study. In recent years, developing creative industries has become an important strategic initiative of fulfilling old industrial areas′ revitalization in developed countries and regions. The current studies on creative transformation of old industrial areas mainly focus on the status and effectiveness of creative transformation of old industrial zone, but seldom concern the mechanism of transformation from theoretical perspective. In this paper, the theories of path dependence and path creation are employed as the theoretical tools to study on the mechanism and path of the creative transformation in old industrial area, with Shijingshan, Beijing as an example. The paper first explains the concepts of path dependence, lock-in, path creation and their application in explaining the transformation of old industrial area; and then analyzes the historical origin of Shijingshan old industrial areas and its problems, then explores the creative transformation paths of Shijingshan, putting forwards three main paths, i. e., the industrial design and development, digital entertainment and recreation tourism industry; finally, this paper concludes with the responsibilities that the government should take in the transition process.
